What you should wear to your downtown Salt Lake City engagement photos

Planning a wedding is stressful and one thing I don’t want you to be stressed about is what you’re wearing to your engagement session.

So let me walk you step by step on how to have a successful engagement photoshoot.

First: What is an engagement shoot?

Typically happens after getting engaged and the photos are typically used for wedding invites.

I offer two clothing options for engagement shoots, one outfit more casual and one outfit more formal/ “Sunday best”. That way you get a couple different looks in.

Here Sam and Emily booked their downtown Salt Lake City engagement photos a couple of weeks after getting engaged.

We started with a more casual look, jeans and a nice top, that allowed for more movement like running and lifting.

Then at our second location they changed to a more formal look that gave a really fun different vibe.

What should you wear to your engagement shoot?

Wear something that is comfortable to move in. I like giving couples a lot of movement prompts so it feels more natural

Pick textures over patterns. Tight patterns can look off on camera but textures like knit fabrics make your photos  more interesting.

If possible wear layers. Layers help add interest and movement to your photos.

Emily opted to wear a sparkly black dress for your second clothing option which gave a really fun look when I took out the flash.

What are some good tips for picking my outfit for engagement photos?

Don’t wear logos or graphic T-shirts. If you want timeless photos you can print and put up on the walls, avoid logos.

Coordinating over matching. Pick 2-3 colors that go together to use and mix and match them to see what is the best fit.

Most of all wear something YOU really like and feel confident in.

Many couples change their mind a few times up to their shoot, which is fine as long as you feel confident.

I myself bought a dress at a thrift store just a few hours before my engagement photos and it turned out great. I loved the sleeves and texture the dress had and I still love that dress.

Though I don’t usually recommend waiting till the last moment. :)
